Taurine is an organic chemical compound from the group of amino acids. However, this is not a typical protein amino acid, because there is a difference in its chemical structure (it has a sulphonic group instead of a carboxylic acid). Taurine is an essential amino acid for new-borns as well as many other mammalian species. Adults can synthesize taurine by themselves, but probably due to the evolution, they started partly depending on its supply from the outside (exogenously). Taurine is found in the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscle tissue. Despite its small amount, it plays an important role in the proper functioning of these organs. It also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain, a stabilizer of cell membranes, and facilitates the transport of ions such as potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium.
